NLDS Game 2

Why should I have expected anything different?

It is the top of the 8th and I am confident enough that the Cubs will not score 7 runs in 6 outs to write this.  The now-annual lack of offense in the playoffs is disgusting.  Ok….another run for LA.  Now the Cubs need 8 runs in 6 outs.

What hurts more,  years of losing seasons or annual collapses in the playoffs?  Perhaps Dick Stockton wouldn’t seem so bad if we weren’t suffering through Continue reading

Empty the Bench, Lou!

Hoffpauir!

I think right now with this six-game skid, it would be kind of interesting to see what kind of a spark all of the bench players could provide if they all started at the same time.  With fearsome opposing pitchers like Cueto (8-12) and Harang (4-15) coming up, now would be the perfect opportunity to empty the bench.  Continue reading

Mike Micturated on the Phillies’ Rug

Mike Fontenot, Cubs role-player extraordinaire and Owen Wilson stunt double.

Sure sweeping the Pirates is nice, but playing well against a team like the Phillies is even better.  Thursday’s game was one of the most exciting I’ve seen all season, and there have been quite a few exciting games.  Yes, Ramirez was the big hero of the game, but Mike Fontenot deserves some credit. Bipolar Bats Again

Well, the Cubs have been playing pretty good baseball, so what can we whine about, damnit?  These are just not the Cubs we’ve come to know and love.  When the Pirates tied up the game in the eighth inning on Sunday, the old Cubs would’ve rolled over into “steamrollme” position.  However, this year’s team responded to the Pirates’ equalizer with back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of the eighth to put the Cubs ahead for good.  I don’t think Reed Johnson’s contributions to this team can be overstated.  He has been pretty clutch. Is Miller Park REALLY an Away Game?

I believe I have written before that the idea that “This series is important” or “This game is important” is kind of a silly notion.  There are 162 games and though the idea is to just win series’, there are numerous opportunities to make up lost ground.  That said…this series is important.

I don’t think it’s terribly important numbers-wise, although the Cubs and Brewers were close enough last year for it to scare me.  If a few games would have gone the other way, the Cubs wouldn’t have enjoyed getting destroyed by the Arizona in the playoffs.  This series feels important because it has the potential to be a momentum-builder, especially for the Cubs.  I would think it would be kind of deflating for the Brewers Continue reading

Choose your weapon

Ever since the All-Star break, it seems that we never know which bat the Cubs hitters will swing on a particular day.  Too often it has been the ice bat, and quality starts are being wasted. Continue reading

6/2 Notes

*  What a homestand!  The Cubs went 7-0.  What impresses me most about the Cubs sweeping the Dodgers and the Rockies is that all 7 games were tight baseball games.  This team continues Continue reading
