Here comes the offseason

How much longer?

How much longer?

It’s that time of year again. The leaves are changing and falling. The temperature is dropping and hopefully will numb the pain of the early playoff exit and we’ll all turn our attention to other sporting interests. The Bears are better than expected, the Irish have more wins than they had all of last season (that was for you, Corey), the Bulls are young and can only be better with #1 pick Derrick Rose and, if you’re in to the sport of Pailin, the Blackhawks have some young talent as well and they’ll be playing outdoors at Wrigley.

But wait… I have a feeling that our beloved Cubbies won’t allow our attention to be diverted this offseason. Continue reading

Empty the Bench, Lou!

Hoffpauir!

I think right now with this six-game skid, it would be kind of interesting to see what kind of a spark all of the bench players could provide if they all started at the same time.  With fearsome opposing pitchers like Cueto (8-12) and Harang (4-15) coming up, now would be the perfect opportunity to empty the bench.  Continue reading

Hey Look–It’s September!

Well the Cubs looked like they were in a great position to grab another series victory against the Phillies, but they failed offensively in the final two games and only managed to split.  My favorite part of today’s game was Sean Marshall showing bunt, pulling it back, and hitting a single to center field.  Other than that I could have done without all the clutch failure and stranded base runners.  Continue reading

Mike Micturated on the Phillies’ Rug

Mike Fontenot, Cubs role-player extraordinaire and Owen Wilson stunt double.

Sure sweeping the Pirates is nice, but playing well against a team like the Phillies is even better.  Thursday’s game was one of the most exciting I’ve seen all season, and there have been quite a few exciting games.  Yes, Ramirez was the big hero of the game, but Mike Fontenot deserves some credit. 80 Wins? Make It So!

Thirty-three games left.  Can the Cubs win 100 games for the first time since ’35?  I think it is well within the realm of possibility.  We still aren’t out of the woods yet as far as the NL Central race is concerned, but every day the promised land gets closer and closer.  In my opinion, the Cubs are almost a lock to win the pennant.  It’s when you start to look at how the Cubs match up with potential World Series foes that things get interesting.  But this team is certainly capable of defeating all foes, Ivan Drago style.  “I defeat all men!” Continue reading

Peter Gammons plays the guitar?

It’s the 100th anniversary of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” and ESPN had a battle of the bands contest to celebrate. It’s not specifically a tribute to Harry, but there is a good video of him singing on what seems to be Cubs umberella-ella-ella-a giveaway day. I wouldn’t normally promote a contest put on by the boys in Bristol, but this one is already over. The final three were Ozomatli, Punch Brothers and everyone’s favorite redneck woman, Gretchen Wilson.

Break Over… Let’s Get Back to Work

Tomorrow night we embark on the 2nd half, and it looks like Ted Lilly will get a chance to make up for his last start in which he allowed 4 ER and only lasted 2.2 innings.  I am excited for the rest of this season.  Seeing the Cubs pitchers do well against the best of the AL in the All-Star Game was encouraging.
