Congrats Greg Maddux

Alright, I know I’m writing alot of historical blogs, but it’s been a pretty historical season thus far.  In case you hadn’t noticed, Greg Maddux got his 350th career victory last night against the Colorado Rockies.  Winning in typical Maddux fashion, in was a 3-2 victory.  Low Scoring, and efficient.

Have you guys ever actually looked at his career stats?  Good grief.  They’re rediculous.  After posting era’s over 5 and sub .500 records for the first two years of his career, he put up a record of 18-8 with an era of 3.18 in 1988, and didn’t look back.  He didn’t have a season with an era over 4 until 2004 and hasn’t pitched in less than 32 games since 1987, when he started 27.  The guy’s a true gamer, and it has been a true pleasure watching him pitch my whole life.

I’ll tell you another thing, too.  He’s not just a pitcher.  We all knew he could field, and his career 17 gold gloves are pretty telling of what he does with his glove.. but his bat is pretty decent, too.  He has 5 career home runs, and a career batting average of .172.  Not great, and I wouldn’t want him starting in center.. but above the .150 average that most pitchers put up.

So, this one’s for the guy who I got to watch growing up.. the first pitcher in MLB history to win 4 consecutive Cy Young awards, 17 gold gloves, and only the 9th pitcher to ever win 350 or more games.  Kudo’s to you Greg.
